ABOUT ADVENT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

All that we do at Advent Presbyterian Church is guided by our mission which is: to make disciples who worship God, grow spiritually, and share the Good News of Jesus.  Disciples are people who know, love, and follow Jesus.  We “make” disciples by sharing God’s love with others, telling them about Jesus, and inviting them to follow him.  We also “make” disciples by growing and maturing in our faith in Jesus through worship, spiritual growth, and sharing the Good News.

When you come to our church, you will be warmly welcomed and greeted with smiles.  The worship service will help you encounter God through hymns, scripture readings, prayers, and a Bible-based sermon that will help you to grow in your faith and live it out all week long.  And you will learn about other opportunities besides Sunday morning worship for growing as a disciple of Jesus.  After the service, stay and enjoy good food, coffee, and fellowship.  And when you come back again, we will remember you and greet you by name!

If you are looking for a church home where you and your family will be helped and encouraged to grow as a follower of Jesus, come check us out!

GOD

There is only one God, who exists in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one eternal Trinity.  God the Father is the Creator, the Maker and Sustainer of all things seen and unseen.  God the Son is Jesus Christ (see What do you believe about Jesus?).  God the Holy Spirit is the indwelling presence of God in all who trust and believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior.  The Holy Spirit empowers us to live out the Christian life and grow in our relationship with God and transforms us to become more and more like Jesus.

      JESUS

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Word of God made flesh, truly God and truly man, and the only way of salvation.  Jesus chose to leave his perfect, heavenly home to be born as one of us and live as a servant and to give his life on the cross to pay the price for our sin (Phil 2:6-8), and to rescue us from spiritual death (Heb 2:14,15) and the power darkness (Col 1:13).  He rose again, victorious over the grave in the Resurrection, and he ascended to heaven until he comes again to usher in God’s Kingdom where all Creation will be restored to health and wholeness in conformity to God’s good, loving, and perfect will.

BIBLE

The Bible is God’s written Word and authoritative self-revelation, inspired by the Holy Spirit as the infallible Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. As God’s “special revelation,” the Bible reveals who God is, who we are, and how we can live to truly love God, ourselves and others.

      SALVATION

We are saved by God’s grace alone, through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone who gave his life on the cross in our place to pay the price of our sins so that we can experience God’s forgiveness and new life through the Holy Spirit.  God’s salvation is not simply the future promise of eternal life with God in heaven, but a present reality as we experience an ever-growing relationship and union with God and are transformed by the Holy Spirit to become more and more like Jesus.

WHAT IS

PRESBYTERIAN?

    OUR BEGININGS

Presbyterian churches trace their roots back to John Calvin, the leader of the Reformed branch of the Protestant Reformation. Calvin’s followers in Scotland later established the Presbyterian church. The word Presbyterian is derived from the Greek word meaning “elder” and refers to how the church is governed which is by a group of elected elders.

Presbyterians are in full agreement with other theologically “orthodox” Christian denominations such Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox churches on the essential tenets of the Christian faith as expressed in the historic confessions of the church like the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds.  Presbyterian distinctives include an emphasis on God’s sovereignty (i.e. God’s rule and control over all Creation), God’s providence (i.e. his sustaining care and provision for all of Creation, and human beings in particular), human sinfulness (which results in broken relationships between us and God, ourselves, other people, and God’s creation), salvation by grace alone through faith alone (as opposed to works) in Christ alone, the work of the Holy Spirit to empower us to become more like Jesus and to share Jesus with others in our words and actions.

WHAT'S BEST FOR
YOUR FAMILY?

Jesus’ disciples once tried to keep children away from him, thinking they were insignificant and would bother him. But they couldn’t have been more wrong. Jesus rebuked them, saying, “Let the little children come to me – don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

At Advent, we believe that children matter and that we should do all we can to introduce them to Jesus at an early age. According to the Barna Group, 66% of all Christians came to faith before they turned 18. Through our children’s ministry, we are committed to providing parents the support, encouragement, and resources they need to raise their kids to love God, other people, and themselves with all their heart, soul, strength and mind.

SEAN WALKER
Pastor

I’m thrilled to be the pastor here at Advent because the people truly love God and are committed to living out their faith in Christ and sharing his love with others.

My goal is to help everyone at the church to grow in their relationship with Jesus so that his love, his joy, and his peace will fill them and overflow into the lives of those around them.  If you visit us, my prayer is that you will leave with a deeper sense of how special and precious you are in God’s eyes, and how radically he loves you.

MICHELE WARD
Family Ministry Director

I'm so delighted to serve the people of Advent Presbyterian as the family minister.

Advent's mission-mindedness and desire to welcome anyone, and make disciples matched my calling to reach people for Christ and bring them “home”. All are invited to come grow with us, where you will be welcomed like relatives at a family reunion. I can’t wait to meet you!
